 Meet Onyx – [#ShowdownTeamOnyx](https://www.facebook.com/hashtag/showdownteamonyx?__eep__=6&__cft__[0]=AZXgWsgoKysrIPbElhrAurVUmM3Xucv09U45Kp2iShFk3RmzpG_O23wQd8omTDoHd_heAVTaTYXPD4dK0deW7WfV4tVy6w9ebsBcFEFp2itpslliW8cqx7qAKnld21vLg0MGC9yBg6cviqspLtLgI_Z_2st-NtXNAu1D4ErXNvxKukYw1pxSbZWbcew2kJBzVlQ&__tn__=*NK-R)

If you’ve ever dreamed of a Mustang with the striking looks of a Friesian, Onyx might just be your guy. This 3-year-old BLM Mustang gelding stands around 14–14.2 hands and has been making steady progress in training with Jay Westerbur for the 2025 Dakota Showdown Horse Trainer Challenge.

 Easy to catch and halter

 Leads and stands for grooming

 Good with fly spray

Gives front feet willingly (still building confidence on hinds)

 Loads into a trailer

Playful and loves to learn new things

 Knows tricks like “pick up”

Working well in the round pen

Accepting a surcingle, with plans to progress to a saddle by the Showdown

Onyx leans on his person for confidence, so he’ll need someone who’s patient and committed to building his independence and skills. For a previously unhandled 3-year-old Mustang, he’s making great strides and will keep getting better with the right partner.
