Who wants to help Sutton take her first steps toward a new life?

Sutton is one of the horses available to trainers in the Foundation Division of the Dakota Showdown Horse Trainer Challenge.

This striking blue-eyed mare came to Gentle Spirit Horses Rescue from auction alongside her friend Bristol. We estimate she is around 10–12 years old.

Sutton is cautious but thoughtful. She tends to step back and observe before engaging, preferring to take a moment to process what’s happening around her. Though she arrived completely unhandled, she has not shown any aggression — when unsure, she simply chooses to create space.

Horses like Sutton often reveal just how much good horsemanship matters.

The Foundation Division is designed specifically for horses like Sutton. Trainers focus on developing the foundation skills every horse needs to become a good citizen — haltering, handling, trust, and confidence. Riding isn’t the primary goal here, though it can be part of the journey. The real objective is giving horses the skills they need to become adoptable partners.

For horses like Sutton, those first foundations can mean the difference between uncertainty and a real future.

If you’re a trainer who enjoys the challenge of starting at the beginning and helping a horse discover their potential, Sutton may be the partner you’re looking for.

Trainer applications close March 15.
